Vittorio Veneto Square and and Town Hall
Vittorio Veneto square is today the cultural and political center of the country. The current appearance is the result of relatively recent changes that occurred between 1920 and 1930 with the construction of a balconied terrace in front of the existing building already converted to Town Hall to the 800, which still allows a view of a beautiful landscape.
Once through the entrance of the town hall, built in 1858 and later chosen as the seat of government, we can see, on the first floor, the symbol of the city in marble of the city. It shows a female figure holding in his right hand three peaks overlap and the left with a turreted fortress beside the letters V and T (which probably, according to local historians, are the initials of ‘old name of the land: Vetus Tulpha ). There is also another emblem of the city which can be found in the municipal banner: it shows a woman in old age with a calf at her side and a turreted building to another, in reference to a legendary episode linked to the history of the town and its inhabitants. It is said that Tolfa, during a siege, was starved and then near the end, when a clever old lady with a stratagem managed to remove the hook. She rimpinzò a calf grain and made him fall between the besiegers that they too hungry, quartering the beast and rinvenendone believed that Tolfetani wheat, corn to feed the animals, disponessero even enough food and therefore could hold out long. So they decided to lift the siege of the city.
In the courtyard of the palace are preserved some architectural fragments (capitals, friezes, etc. ..) of the medieval church of Sant ‘Arcangelo, which stood in the area now known as Piantangeli about 6 km north of Tolfa. Behind the Town Hall will instead be very welcome for a walk in the old public park.
