Fountain of the Globe
Behind the curve south of the Olympic Stadium, in a large marble ball fountain was placed at the end of the journey between the red buildings of the Foro Italico, juxtaposing and balancing the high monolithic obelisk dating back to Mussolini.
A large circular ring, which can be accessed at several points, with flights of stairs, arranged along the main radial, is paved with tiny mosaic tiles, representing mythological figures, a recurring motif throughout the flooring and decoration of the sports complex, reminiscent of the representations of the baths, the forum, the villas, the most important buildings from Roman times. At the center of the crown, a small step delimits an inclined plane ending in a pool in the shape of a circular crown in which the water collects.
The fountain, however, is often inactive. From the center of the crown, shows a square base that supports the large sphere, once covered with mosaic tiles of a beautiful blue hue china, of which there are sparse examples, where the hand of tireless seekers of souvenirs (but it would be more correct to call them and treat them criminals) failed to arrive. The globe symbolizes the universality of sports games around which gather athletes of all nations.
