Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important of the Roman churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the only one to have preserved the primitive early Christian structure. Built (432-440) by Pope Liberius in the place indicated to him by a miraculous vision of a summer snowfall, the basilica is located on the Esquiline Hill.
