TOLFA NUOVA (MONTE TOLFACCIA)
The area of Tolfa Nuova is located in the resort Fontanaccia and is accessible by car, starting from the hamlet “La Bianca” and following the path of Fontanaccia for a dozen miles to the big fountain said precisely the Fontanaccia, located at foot of Mount Tolfaccia. From here depart the paths that lead us to the villages and at the top.
The medieval settlement of Tolfa Nuova is located on the slopes of Monte Tolfaccia, which represents one of the highest peaks (580 m) and characteristics of the Tolfa Hills. It seems that this settlement was built on the ruins of a Roman city destroyed by the Saracens. Going up the western slopes of Mount Tolfaccia meet the first remains of the ancient settlement emerging from a grove in which dominates the Maple minor, flanked by Field Maple, Elderberry and Olmo.
On the top, which offers a splendid view, we can see the remains of the fortress, a furnace of 1300, which are still intact the grinders, the water tower, the church with some adjacent graves.
The whole area of Mount Tolfaccia has been the subject of numerous archaeological discoveries that led to the discovery of proto-historic, Etruscan, Roman and medieval, currently housed in the Civic Museum of Allumiere and Tolfa. Furthermore the area is of great value vegetation with the presence of one of the most beautiful forest trees in the area which is the perfect setting for the remains that can be seen along the trails.
